Cost of living in Mwanza

Question

Hello

My partner has been offered a job in Mwanza which will pay $1124 per month after tax. We get free accommodation and bills are paid. I would not have paid work but would volunteer and the children would have a free place at the school. Does anybody know if this amount is sufficient for a family of 4 to live on, children are 11 and 14?

I have no idea how much we are likely to spend on food on a weekly basis, we both like cooking and are happy not to buy expensive expat foods, we like eating out and exploring. We would need to pay for internet access and transport but no car costs as we would use local transport.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

  1. You will get along well at that amount of money, especially since you don’t have any housing expenses. If you use public transportation that is very inexpensive there, like dala dala cost is about 500 shillings (about 25 cents).
If you don’t use Western kinds of food and purchase fresh foods/groceries in the local markets you will find that your food costs will be very low, perhaps $200 – $300 a month. You can get second hand clothing in the local markets, sometimes very expensive high end clothing, for next to nothing (called mutumba).
When you go to volunteer you will need to have an appropriate visa, unless you will have a resident permit which allows employment, immigration looks at volunteer work as employment.
